This is the first book of the Lorien Legacies series written by Pittacus Lore who is actually a real character in the book. It’s told by number four, who names himself John Smith after he is asked to change his identity. John is part of the 9 remaining Garde (people with super powers or “Legacies”) that come from a destroyed planet called Lorien. They are hiding on earth with their Cepans (or caretakers) until they develop their legacies to fight the race that attacked their planet, the Mogodorians. The Garde have to hide from them until they are strong enough to fight. Each Garde gets a number from 1 to 9 and they can only be killed in that order. At the beginning of the book they describe the death of number 3 in an African jungle, which means that John, number four, is next in the Mogodorian list. He leaves Miami when the Mogodorian found a lead to him and goes to a small town called Paradise. He goes to school and meets Sarah Heart and Sam, they become his friends and eventually discover his identity. John discover 2 of his legacies while at Paradise, He could talk to animals and can make his hands glow with a hot light. He spends lots of time trying to control his abilities. They are found by the Mogs and in the process of escaping, Henri, his Cepan, dies. He is then found in a huge war inside his school, where he meets an unexpected ally, number six.
I like this story because it was really engaging, you always want to know what happens next and read the next books. It’s full of cliffhangers and spins that you will never know what will happen next. The language used in the book is really colloquial, everyday language that makes it easier to relate with. This book is told in first person, from John´s point of view. I will definitely recommend this book to all sci-fi readers because of its content and engaging and easy to follow plotline.
