It is usually hard to distinguish when a character is a tragic hero and John Proctor of The Crucible is not the exception.
A tragic hero, put into simple words is a character of a book or a movie that has a good reputation, that people respect and think highly of that ends up trying to do something but ends up screwing his life, that mistake is usually very big and ultimately ends up destroying the character, for instance you could use Rome from William Shakespeare’s world famous play, Romeo and Juliet, in this case he just was partially unlock when he was banished and didn’t receive the plan to be with Juliet, he ends up killing himself thinking that she was dead. There is not a lot of information or details on Proctor´s exact reputation, being thought highly of by many people but also despite by people with power like Revered Parris and Thomas Putnam for land disputes. This is why he fits in the position of tragic hero.
In the Crucible Proctor is a farmer who is respected in Salem, he is married and has 3 children. He is a person full of pride and he is not easily led by other people, he likes to make desertions for himself, they can end up being good ideas, like for example getting extra land to grow his riches and bad ones like not going to church and fighting with Parris, not saying the 10 commandments when he is asked to and especially getting into an affair with 17 year old Abigail Williams, Parris´nice.
After the affair she got really attached to him but was fired by his Wife Elizabeth. Mad with her Abigail resorted to witchcraft to try to curse her so she could have Proctor but he ignored her, full of vengeance she was cough doing witchcraft she started accusing people of bewitching her and her friends to saver herself from whipping. She gets a lot of girls like Susana Walcott and Proctor´s new housekeeper Mary Warren to accuse over 400 people in Salem and nearby towns of witchcraft witch began the Salem witch trials and persecution. She plotted to use a gift Mary warren gave Elizabeth to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft and get her vengeance. Trying to save Elizabeth , Proctor confesses to Lechery and when asked about this Elizabeth denied it so he would keep his good name, she is taken over to jail for witchcraft and Proctor gets thrown to jail and given a death sentence for trying to overthrow the Salem court. So he had a good reputation a a good intention when he confessed to lechery to help his wife but ends up not only with her in jail but also he gets thrown to jail as a result, that is why I think that John Proctor is a tragic hero.
